Medical Gastroenterology

Department of Digestive Health and Diseases (Department of Medical Gastroenterology) has been functioning in Govt peripheral hospital, Annanagar, since 6th august 1986, vide G.O. MS. No. 1277. This department has 2 units with 40 beds. DM Higher Speciality course in Medical Gastroenterology was started in this hospital in the year 1999 with two seats This course is the first DM course in the medical history of KMC, Chennai. This course has had the recognition and clearance by the Ministry of Health, Government of India, and Medical council of India, Government of Tamilnadu and the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai.

Seats have been increased from two to four in the year 2007 and further to six seats in the year 2010. Average of 100 to 150 out patients get treatment in this department every day including 30 to 50 new patients.

In this department we are doing various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

	Side viewing scopy
	Liver biopsy
	Ultrasound abdomen
	Barium studies

	Endoscopic Sclerotherapy
	Endoscopic variceal ligation (Banding)
	Oesophageal dilatation for benign , corrosive and malignant strictures.
	Balloon dilation for Achalasia Cardia
	Oesophageal stenting for cancer oesophagus
	Endoscopic Polypectomy
	Foreign body( coins, pins, button batteries, denture etc) removal
	Endoscopic management of ulcer bleed
	Liver Abscess aspiration
	Therapeutic paracentesis of ascites
	PEG ( percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy)
	PTBD ( percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage)

	CBD (common bile duct) stone extraction
	Stenting of bile duct for benign and malignant biliary obstruction
	Pancreatic stenting and pancreatic stone removal.
	Treatment for biliary ascariasis
	Endoscopic cystogastrostomy for pancreatic pseudocyst
