We teach O & G from the III semester for the UG Courses. They attend OP, Wards and theatre. We take clinical classes, conduct symposium and lecture classes in the After noon.

We have three DGO postgraduates and this year the MD postgraduates have been increased from three to seven. We also conduct clinical meetings, CMEs, Journal clubs and attend conferences and present papers in the FOGSI meetings.

About 700 deliveries are conducted per month on an average of 7800 cases annually, among which 40-50% are LSCS, as ours is a tertiary care centre, where we receive referral cases handled outside.

On the Gynaec side, we do 350 major and 99 minor cases, annually.

Under Family Planning Unit. We do both temporary and permanent methods of sterilization. Ours is also a Training Centre for N S V. a detailed write up on NSV Training Programme is given below.

Besides the routine activities like performing OP and surgical performances, we have conducted the following training programmes.

	CEMONC Training programme
	S B A (Skill Birth attendance for Staff Nurses and ANMs)
	Ultrasound Training Programme for Medical officers from the Districts and PHCs.
	N S V Training
	AMSTL Training.
	Micro Surgical Technique Training & Core officer training.
	Post –placental insertion of CuT Training.

NSV is also done in Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

Male Core Officer is a qualified Urologist, who is also the State Trainer for NSV and proposals are there for the COE at KMCH to be made as a Regional Training Centre for NSV, In 2008, 76 NSV cases were done. In the NSV camp conducted in the year 2009, 243 cases were done.

At present, NSV Service cum Training Programme, funded by HRHM, is being held in the department monthly twice on Wenesday, Thursday and Fridays of the 1st week and 3rd week of every month, totaling 30 camps, which commenced from the 17th of June 2009. Four Medical Officers are trained per camp from DME, DMS and DPH side. So far, an average of 15 cases/ camp have been done.

Centre Of Excellence (Coe) In Microsurgery And Tubal Recanalisation

During the late 80s, the Govt. of India (GOI) and Govt. of Tamil Nadu (GOTN) realised the need to provide a centre for tubal microsurgery and recanalisation to those women and men who had undergone sterilization and who subsequently regret the decision either due to loss of a child or other social and demographic reasons. The available centres were mainly in the private sector and it was beyond the reach of majority of the population. Hence with the help and liberal aid form the Association for Voluntary Surgical Contraception (AVSC), USA and the UN agency UNFPA (United Nations fund for population activities) 4 COEs were started in India. They are:

	Kilapuk Medical College and Hospital, Chennai
	Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi
	R.G.Kher Medical College, Kolkatta and
	G.S.Seth Medical College, Mumbai.

The MOU signed at that time was for continuing the COE under GOI and UNFPA and later to be taken over by GOTN. The area of coverage for the Kilpauk Medical College included apart from the southern states, The Andamans also.

The Centre of Excellence (C O E), Microsurgical Unit was declared opened on 24th June 87 by the then Hon. Minister of Health and Family Welfare, vide G.O. 1112/Health dt.16.6.87. The COE was functioning as a service and training centre for microsurgical recanalisation under the auspices of Govt. of India, Govt. of Tamilnadu, UNFPA, and AVSC.

The Kilpauk Medical College centre was unique in that it had an exclusive animal lab with a dedicated veterinary medical officer.

The first director of the COE was none other that Prof. Padmashree B.Palaniappan, MS, FRCS who was also invited by the AVSC to Korea to enlighten the COE activities in India in its first International meet.

After the first Director, Prof. B,Palaniappan, Prof. T.K.Mohanaklakshmi became the next Director of COE. The department was subsequently headed by many gynecologists.

Prof. A. Rajasekaran, was the first Male Core Officer and he was succeeded by other professors of Urology.

15 microsurgery core officer training workshops were conducted each for 15 days. The trainees were from all parts of the country.

The centre had also conducted 37 workshops on sterilization and four on vasectomy including Non scalpel vasectomy.

COE and OGSSI have already conducted two microsurgical workshops and this is the third. So far 23 candidates have been trained from OGSSI.

Similarly 8 candidates were trained in a workshop conducted in collaboration with MGR University.

At present COE caters to poor women seeking reversal of sterilization and infertile women with tubal block. There is a steady demand for microsurgical recanalisation due to unfortunate loss of the child subsequent to sterilization and in infertile women. Tubal recanalisation was performed for women in dire need as in cases of natural calamity like Tsunami and tragedy like Kumbakonam fire accident. The need for reversal of sterilization will be present till the neonatal and infant mortality I s brought to zero.

The incident of infertility attending Gynaec. OP is around 15%.

Recently we have conducted Training courses in Female Recanalisation for the Core officers of Centre of Excellence of India.
