Nephrology Department was founded in 1984 by Dr. C.M. Thiagarajan. Dialysis facilities were initiated in the same year. Subsequently the department saw gradual progress under the leadership of the following Professors.
Activities SERVICE – In Patient and Out Patient Services. Out patient clinics are conducted three times a week ( Monday, Wednesday and Friday). For renal transplant recipients, a separate out patient clinic is conducted on Tuesdays. The Department offers a comprehensive renal care including kidney biopsy, peritoneal dialysis, Hemodialysis, Renal Transplanation and Post transplant follow up. Post transplant immune suppressive medicines are provided free of cost life long . About 25 peritoneal dialysis and 100 to 150 hemodialysis are performed every month. In the year 2009, 6 Kidney transplants were done. Academics And Research The department provides regular Nephrology teaching to the under graduates and M.D. General Medicine Post Graduates students. The department has a structured academic programme for the D.M.Nephrology course which includes case presentations, Journal Club, Lectures and Seminars. The department also runs a certificate course on DIALYSIS TECHNOLOGY ( duration 1 year) At present 5 students are undergoing training in dialysis. In the year 2009 City Nephrologists’s meet was organized twice at Govt. Kilpauk Medical College, in which interesting and rare clinical cases were presented to the Nephrologists of the city. The following research papers were presented in the annual conference of Indian Society of Nephrology and Southern Chapter of Indian Society of Nephrology.
CME Lecture on ‘ Renal Artery Stenosis’ was delivered by Prof. N.Gopalakrishnan at the Annual Conference of Southern Chapter of Indian Society of Nephrology held at Kanniyakumari in 2009. An ongoing long term research project is in progress on ‘ HIV Nephrology’. So far, about 8000 patients with HIV have been screened and analysed for renal disease in collaboration with Institute of Chest Diseases, Tambaram. This project has already attracted lot of attention in the academic circles, since this is one of the largest study population of HIV patients in the world literature.
World Kidney Day To create awareness about kidney diseases, world kidney day is observed on the second Thursday of March every year. In 2009 all the paramedical staff were screened for diabetes, hypertension and kidney diseases. In 2010 on World kidney day, a similar screening programme was conducted at Nehru Park, Poonamallee High Road, which earned lot of accolades from the public and media.
